Fossil fuels started to be used a lot more after the industrial revolution (DOE - Fossil Energy: A Brief History of Coal Use in the United States). For example, a widely used fossil fuel was coal. Coal was used by steam ships and steam powered railroads. Then during the American civil war weapon factories used coal. (DOE - Fossil Energy: A Brief History of Coal Use in the United States) Coal was then used to power homes and it’s still being used to power homes and businesses. Coal today is 40% of the world’s energy (“About Coal,” 2014).
The use of fossil fuels has increased with the advancements in new ways to power factories and homes. During the 1800s coal was used to make steel and many other products that gave power to the factories. During the industrial revolution there many type of workers. Child labor was a big part of the industrial revolution and children were paid very little amounts. They were used in mines because they were able to fit in small spaces. They were also used in cotton mills. Children workers were working 12 hours a day with only one hour break. Sometimes they worked for 18 hours a day. These bad working conditions made workers to come together and ask for better working conditions. (“Child Labor”, 2009)
My topic of fossil fuels focuses on the economic, social, political, and cultural climate of the fossil fuel industry. Child labor was a big part of this industry until legislatures made laws to protect the children and adult workers. Child labor helped influence the making of a national minimum wage and the maximum of hours someone should work. This also helped by the government making an increase of schooling required and by making the school year longer. Many jobs that children had were then given to the adults. (“Child Labor”, 2009)
